May 29, 2017: Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan
Japan turned on perfect weather for our day in Kyoto.
Nijo castle presented a fascinating insight into the life of a Shogun, who ruled Japan as a military dictators for over 700 years. The castle’s nightingale floors squeaked under foot as we viewed the stunning paintings of the famous Kano school lining the walls of the Shogun’s audience rooms.
Next stop was the famous Golden Pavilion or Kinkakuji temple which …

50°F (10°C)

We converged on the small city of Ushuaia, all of us arriving from distant reaches of the planet for the same reason: to embark on an expedition to experience the wildlife and landscapes of the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. December 29, 2016: Onboard ‘Le Lyrial’

Last evening our new guests arrived at ‘Le Lyrial’ between 4 and 5 pm. After lunch at the Arakur Hotel, many had gone on a hike, and brought a huge amount of mud on board via the soles of their boots. It is easy to see how grass seeds, etc are easily transferred to places like South Georgia and Antarctica in this manner. Ship’s staff who had so diligently cleaned ‘Le …

January 8, 2017: Ushuaia

We arrived from all corners of the world to Ciudad del Fin de Mundo: the City at the End of the World – the port of Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is located on the island of Tierra del Fuego, which is shared between Argentina and Chile. Ushuaia is home to approximately 45,000 inhabitants and, although still growing rapidly, it maintains some of its frontier-town atmosphere with streets of small, higgledy-piggledy houses. Our flights were …

January 18, 2017:Ushuaia

By various means, and mostly by charter flight from Buenos Aires, we arrived in Ushuaia. Following the spine of the Andes throughout the morning, our flight crossed countless volcanic peaks and, as we ap-proached Tierra del Fuego, glaciers grew in frequency and size. The scenery had to be seen to be believed as we passed over glaciers, glacial lakes and towering volcanic peaks covered in snow. The growing out¬post of Ushuaia, a small city …
